Fun-filled 3-day Drumming Retreat in beautiful Lake County! Come learn and play with us as we explore African Rythmns with a South African native drumming Master!!!

Baba Shibambo is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and international recording artist dedicated to the preservation of traditional South Africa music and culture through the arts. Shibambo grew up in South Africa during the Apartheid era. Born a Zulu, Shibambo translates into English as “Guardian of the Skins”. The Shibambos were esteemed for their position as caretakers of the tribe's animal skins for clothing and most importantly for their drums. Under his mother’s tutelage, he started playing drums at an early age. During apartheid, Shibambo’s music became a vehicle for cultural awareness and freedom of expression. In South Africa he performed for Nelson Mandela and subsequently toured with the stage production, Ipitombe, performing worldwide for over 10 years playing to audiences in Israel, Africa, England, Ireland, and other European locations. Motion picture credits include Out of Africa (1983), with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep and Hold My Hand I’m Dying (1989) in which Shibambo choreographed ethnic dances, acted, and composed the films’ soundtrack. In 1993 Shibambo was invited to come to the United States to be part of the Northern Arizona University’s World Peace Festival. Since then, he has penned, choreographed and directed his own stage productions that have been commissioned by the South African Arts Council, the Arizona Commission for the Arts and the Arts Endowment. Currently, Shibambo teaches Zulu culture and drumming in school systems and libraries in California and Arizona.

• Basics of djembe construction; learn how to tighten a drum – pulling ropes and tying diamonds (Drum Building Participants)
• Basic skill in djembe technique – bass, tone, slaps and embellishments
• Playing basic rhythms with multiple parts
• Gain exposure to playing dununs Zulu style
• Increased drumming confidence by playing in a safe, fun environment without fear of judgement or failure
• Discovery of your own style and learn to play “outside the box” through drum circle experience

Cost for the full 3 day workshop is $595 plus materials for drum-making, onsite camping at beautiful Golden Rocks Permaculture Farm located in Middletown, Lake County, CA.  Participants can opt to take drum instruction only as well,  FOR TICKETS  and pricing options CLICK HERE.

The workshop participants will enjoy shared community kitchen space, access to outdoor shower and bath tub, evening gatherings and plenty of  drumming, fellowship and story-telling.  Attendees under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Group, family and senior discounts available.
